How Much Does a Bathroom Remodel Cost in Michigan?

Most full bathroom remodels in Metro-Detroit cost $18,000 to $40,000. Powder rooms start near $8,000 and master baths run up to $65,000. Here is what moves the number.

These are the same ranges our bathroom remodel estimator uses. They come from real projects in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne County homes, not national averages.

What is included in these prices

A complete remodel. That means demolition and disposal, the new shower or tub system, vanity and countertop, faucet and shower hardware, lighting, flooring, and cleanup.

The ranges assume the room keeps its layout. Moving a wall or relocating plumbing pushes a project past the top of its range.

The eight things that move the price

Our in-home estimate asks the same questions the estimator does. These are the variables that change the number.

  1. Bathroom type. A powder room has no wet area, so there is no shower system, waterproofing or glass door to pay for. That alone separates an $8,000 project from a $20,000 one.
  2. Size. Small bathrooms are about 35 square feet, standard ones 35 to 60, large ones 65 and up. Size mostly changes flooring, wall coverage and how much tile sits outside the shower.
  3. What happens to the tub and shower. Keeping a tub/shower combo costs the least. A tub-to-shower conversion costs more because the space is re-framed and waterproofed. A separate tub and shower costs the most because you are buying two systems.
  4. Tile outside the shower. Tile floors and half-walls add material and labor. Waterproof luxury vinyl plank costs less to install, is warmer underfoot, and is what we put in our 5-day remodels.
  5. Moving walls. Framing, drywall, electrical and usually plumbing. This is the biggest single jump and the main reason a standard bathroom ends up priced like a master.
  6. Age of the bathroom. At 25 years or older, plumbing and electrical often need updating once the walls are open. We price that up front, not mid-project.
  7. Leaks or water damage. Soft subfloor, rotted framing or mold behind old tile has to be fixed before anything new goes in. Our estimators look for it during the visit, so it is in the quote, not an extra.
  8. Where the bathroom is. Basement bathrooms may need a pump or drain work. Second-floor bathrooms mean more protection for the rest of the house during demo.

What a RenovationsNOW bathroom remodel includes

Our 5-day full bathroom remodel is priced as one package, which is why the ranges above are useful. Every quote includes:

  • Demolition and disposal of the old bathroom
  • NOWStone composite shower walls: three custom-fitted panels, no grout, no tile to crack
  • Heavy-duty framed or frameless glass shower door
  • New vanity, faucet, showerhead and shower hardware in your choice of finish
  • Lighting and towel bar
  • Waterproof, slip-resistant luxury vinyl plank flooring
  • Installation by our own employee crew, never subcontractors, in 5 days
  • A lifetime material and labor guarantee

Anything outside that list shows as its own line on the quote. Nothing to decode.

Small bathroom remodel cost

A small bathroom is not automatically a cheap one. The shower system, vanity, toilet and fixtures cost the same at 35 square feet as at 60. You save on flooring and wall coverage. A small standard bathroom in Metro-Detroit prices toward the bottom of the $18,000 to $40,000 range. A small powder room prices toward the bottom of $8,000 to $22,000.

Master bathroom remodel cost

Master bathrooms cost more for three reasons. They are bigger, they usually keep a separate tub and shower, and they carry more storage and lighting.

The highest-leverage decision is the tub. If nobody uses it, replacing a garden tub with a larger walk-in shower frees up floor space and budget for the vanity and finishes.

The cheaper option: remodel only the shower

If the vanity and floor are fine and the shower is the problem, you do not need a full remodel. Our 3-day shower or bathtub remodel replaces the walls, fixtures and door, or converts the tub to a walk-in shower, and leaves the rest of the room alone. It is the most common way our customers get a new-looking bathroom for well under the full-remodel ranges.

Frequently asked questions

Is an online bathroom remodel cost calculator accurate?

Accurate for the range, not the exact number. Calculators, including ours, cannot see water damage, old plumbing or how much tile is outside the shower. Use it to set expectations, then get the in-home estimate for the real figure.

Do I need a permit to remodel a bathroom in Michigan?

When plumbing or electrical is moved or replaced, your municipality requires one. We go over what your city requires during the in-home estimate.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

Our full remodels take 5 days and shower remodels take 3 days, start to finish, because one employee crew does every step. Typical contractor timelines run several weeks because each trade is scheduled separately.

Does the price include demolition and cleanup?

Yes. Demolition, disposal and daily cleanup are part of every quote.

What is included in a bathroom remodel?

Demolition, the shower or tub system, vanity, fixtures, lighting, flooring and cleanup. Wall moves, plumbing relocation and tile outside the shower are quoted as separate lines.
